Background of the Study
Interactive learning strategies have emerged as a transformative approach in education, particularly in the field of STEM, where student engagement and active participation are crucial. In Nguru LGA, Yobe State, there has been a significant shift from traditional lecture-based instruction to more dynamic, interactive methods that encourage critical thinking and collaborative problem-solving. Interactive strategies such as group discussions, hands-on projects, digital simulations, and real-time feedback have been shown to enhance student understanding and retention of complex STEM concepts (Abubakar, 2023; Yusuf, 2024). These methods foster an environment where students can experiment, ask questions, and learn from each other, thereby bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Schools that have adopted interactive learning approaches report higher levels of student engagement and improved academic performance. However, the implementation of these strategies is not without challenges. In Nguru LGA, issues such as limited access to technological resources, insufficient teacher training, and large class sizes can hinder the effective use of interactive methods. Despite these challenges, there is growing evidence that interactive learning can significantly impact STEM achievement by creating a more stimulating and inclusive learning environment. This study aims to explore the impact of interactive learning strategies on STEM achievement in Nguru LGA by examining both quantitative performance data and qualitative feedback from educators and students. The research will assess the extent to which these methods improve comprehension, foster critical thinking, and promote a more engaging classroom atmosphere. By identifying best practices and potential areas for improvement, the study seeks to provide actionable recommendations for educators and policy-makers to enhance STEM education in Yobe State (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the Problem (300 words)
Despite the promising benefits of interactive learning strategies in improving STEM outcomes, many schools in Nguru LGA face significant obstacles in their implementation. The primary challenges include a lack of modern technological tools, inadequate training for teachers on interactive methodologies, and infrastructural constraints that limit the use of digital resources. Consequently, while some schools have successfully integrated interactive methods into their teaching, others continue to rely on traditional, lecture-based approaches, resulting in uneven student performance across the region. Teachers have reported that the absence of sufficient interactive tools and support often leads to reduced student engagement and lower achievement levels in STEM subjects. Moreover, large class sizes further complicate the adoption of interactive strategies, as it becomes challenging to manage active discussions and hands-on activities effectively. These issues have contributed to a gap between the potential benefits of interactive learning and its practical application, ultimately affecting overall STEM achievement. This study aims to investigate the barriers to implementing interactive learning strategies in Nguru LGA and to assess their impact on student performance. By collecting data from various schools and obtaining insights from educators, the research will identify the critical factors that hinder the effective use of interactive methods. The study will also explore how enhanced teacher training, improved infrastructure, and increased access to digital resources can mitigate these challenges and promote better learning outcomes in STEM education (Olawale, 2023).
